NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team turned in a dominant effort in its 2021 home debut on Thursday afternoon en route to a 9-0 victory over NVU-Lyndon at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (2-0) got off to a strong start, sweeping all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead and never looked back on its way to its 25th win in the last 26 matches vs. the Hornets.
Senior Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) stayed perfect on the season winning at No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2 over Neal Mulligan. He also teamed with junior Timothy Santy (San Antonio, Texas) to take No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Mulligan and Zach Falkenburg.
Santy shutout Ken Niemann at No. 2 singles 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 2-0 in solo play on the season.
Senior Abbie Barker (Warren, Vt.) teamed with freshman Austin Rosas (San Benito, Texas) to take No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Quinlan Peer and Niemann. Barker also took No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Peer to improve to 2-0 in solo play. Rosas swept Garrick Webster at No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-0.
Senior Brandon Sichak (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Jack Lepage (Palmyra, Maine) won No. 3 doubles 8-1, while Sichak won No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1 against James Salvas.
Sophomore Matthias Tchantouridze (Montpelier, Vt.) took No. 3 singles over Falkenburg 6-1, 6-2 to round out the match.
Norwich will host Castleton University at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14th at Shapiro Field House. Saturday's originally scheduled match at Colby-Sawyer has been cancelled.
