WORCESTER, Mass. – The Norwich University wrestling team took on WPI Saturday afternoon in a duel meet hosted by the Engineers. The Cadets came out of the meet victorious winning 24-19, after a late comeback.
Five members of the Cadet wrestling team were able to score for the Cadets, including the three final scoring matches of the meet, to overtake WPI.
After the Engineers won the opening match at 157-pounds, Joe Castellino (Natick, Mass.) was able to win his match by fall at 165-pounds, and Tyler Barker (Round Rock, Texas) followed with a win by fall in the 174-pound weight class giving the Cadets a 12-3 lead after three matches.
WPI then won the following four matches at 184, 197, 285, and 125 to retake the lead 19-12.
Dylan King (Milsboro, Del.) edged out his opponent in the 133-pound match to earn three points for the Cadets, winning by decision 5-4. Joseph Lotruglio (Andover, N.J.) also won by decision 5-2 against Zachary Rioux, who was ranked seventh in this week's New England Wrestling Association rankings.
Kyle Merritt (Hope Valley, R.I.) completed the comeback by winning the 149-pound match by fall earning six points and completing the victory for the Cadets.
Norwich will close out the fall semester competing at the RIT Invitational on Saturday, Dec. 4 beginning at 9:30 a.m.
