PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Norwich University Wrestling team wrapped up competition at Day 2 of the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships finishing in 16th spot overall. The Cadets boasted a pair of placers at 149 and 184 pounds.
After Day 1 concluded on Saturday, Norwich's junior Ben Forsman (Voorhees, N.J.) and sophomore Daniel Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) put themselves in a position to challenge for a top-three finish in their respective weight classes.
In the third round of the consolation bracket at 149 pounds, Forsman came up short against Springfield's Chase Parrot falling by an 11-3 major decision. Trailing 2-0 after the first period, Forsman mustered just a single escape by the end of the second period to fall behind 6-1 after two. Needing to score to make up ground, Forsman surrendered a pair of takedowns in the final period to fall 11-3.
In his final bout for 7th place, Forsman lost by fall late in the third period to Ronan Ball of RPI after trailing 13-7 with just 21 seconds remaining in the matchup. The loss resulted in an 8th place finish for the third-year wrestler.
Curran, the #6 ranked wrestler by NEWA, found himself behind 10-4 after two periods in his third-round consolation bout at 184 pounds against #8 NEWA ranked Anthony Malfitano of Roger Williams. A quick takedown by Curran just seconds into the third period followed by a two-point nearfall reduced the deficit to 10-8 with 1:37 remaining in the bout. However, Malfitano scored on an escape and a takedown to extend his lead to 13-10. A reversal by Curran with just 10 seconds to wrestle was not enough as he fell 13-10.
Curran benefitted from a medical forfeit by his Castleton opponent in his final bout to secure a 7th place finish.
