Men's Tennis: Thomas tops Norwich, 6-3

BERLIN, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team fell 6-3 to Thomas College in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at First in Fitness.

Thomas swept the doubles portion of the match to gain a 3-0 lead that proved to be the difference as the two sides split the six singles matches at three each.

Sophomores Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) and Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) and junior Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah. N.J.) each won singles matches for the Cadets in the loss.

Gilmore won No. 2 singles 6-1, 6-4 over Kaleb Payson to improve to a team-best 10-7 in singles matches this season.

Stillman and Birnbaum both won three-set thrillers with Stillman beating Jose Afonso 6-4, 4-6 and 10-3 at No. 5 singles in the deciding pro-set. Birnbaum beat John Farrington 6-2, 4-6 and 10-5 at No. 6 singles.

Norwich closes out its 2019 season this week with back-to-back road GNAC matches at Regis (Mass.) on Thursday and then Suffolk on Saturday.
