NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich wrestling team matched a feat that hasn't been done in some time as it produced a pair of individual champions at the RIT Invitational on Saturday going up against some challenging opponents including a pair of top 25 ranked programs.

Sophomore Dan Curran (Peterborough, N.H.) claimed the title in the 184-pound class while senior Mike Wagner (Tyngsborough, Mass). topped all competitors in the 285-pound bracket.

Both wrestlers were ranked at the number one wrestler in their respective classes heading into the bouts and received byes into the second round.

Curran pinned his first opponent in 2:52 to qualify for the quarterfinals where he then claimed a major decision victory to move onto the semis. Facing the host RIT wrester in the semifinal Curran notched another pin this time in 2:14. The championship bout saw Curran matched up against the second-ranked wrestler at 184 pounds. Curran scored a win with a 12-8 decision to clinch the victory.

Wagner pinned the opposing wrestler in his first matchup in 1:05 to quickly move onto the quarterfinals. He used a win by decision (4-1) to qualify for the semifinals where he would pin the fifth-ranked wrestler in the weight class in 2:15 to head to the championship bout where he faced the third-ranked Mitch Dowd. Wagner wrapped up the perfect day with a 7-2 decision win.

Freshman Cameron Wooldridge (Roanoke, Va.), sophomore Blaise Bressler (Fredericksburg, Pa.), and sophomore Jeromy Henning (Watertown, N.Y.) each notched a trio of wins in their respective weight classes, while freshman Niko Chitty (Coral Springs, Fla.) and sophomore Isaac Hahr (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) picked up a pair of wins.

In total, the Cadets won nine of their matches with pins, seven by decision, three by major decision, and two by tech fall.

The Cadets will tackle exams and then enjoy a long break over the holiday before hitting the mats on January 11th at the Plymouth State Invitational.
