NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a dominant 9-0 sweep over the Lyndon State College Hornets on Thursday afternoon in Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (4-1, 0-0 GNAC) only lost six total games in singles action as the Cadets rolled to the non-conference victory over Lyndon State.
The Cadets swept doubles to take a commanding 3-0 lead and then kept up the momentum through the singles matches.
Sophomore Dylan Ackerman (Saipain, Northern Mariana Islands) had the hardest time out of all the singles matches, downing Jake LaCerda 6-2, 6-2 to take No. 1 singles.
Freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) remained unbeaten in his collegiate singles career with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Neal Mulligan at No. 2 singles. Junior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) moved to 5-0 at No. 3 singles this season with a 6-0, 6-0 win.
Freshman Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) continued to impress at winning GNAC Rookie of the Week honors, winning 6-0, 6-1 in his match at No. 4 singles this season.
Freshman Maddy Muthukumaraswany (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Tim Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) rounded out the singles victories at the No. 5 and No. 6 spots with 6-0, 6-0 victories.
Ackerman and Gilmore took No. 1 doubles 8-3 over LaCerda and Mulligan. Beiter and senior Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) beat Gerald Fleming and Korey Steele 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Birnbaum and freshman Abbie Barker (Waterbury, Vt.) beat Mukhtar Abdullahi and Raymond Monroe 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
Barker picked up her first collegiate victory in the No. 3 doubles win.
Norwich will face its toughest challenge of the season to date on Saturday when it hosts preseason title favorite Regis at 1 p.m. in Shapiro Field House. The Pride won five straight NECC Championship titles before joining the GNAC this academic year.
