NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team finally broke its four-match losing streak with a big 9-0 win over Lyndon State on Wednesday evening at Shapiro Field House. 

Norwich (5-5, 0-3 GNAC North) leveled its record to .500 on the season and swept the season series over the Hornets with the victory. 

Junior Kyle Larrain (Bordentown, N.J.) picked up his first collegiate singles victory with a win at the No. 6 position over Jeremy Polonia with a 7-5, 6-3 win. 

Sophomore Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands), freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.), sophomore Tim Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.), junior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and freshman Maddy Muthukumaraswany (Montreal, Quebec) each recorded two victories to lead the Cadets on the day. 

Ackerman took No. 1 singles in a battle against Jake LaCerda. Ackerman won 6-4, 3-6 and 10-6 in a tiebreaker third set. 

Gilmore beat Neal Mulligan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and then teamed with Ackerman to down LaCerda and Mulligan 8-5 at No. 1 doubles. Gilmore improved his team-best singles record to 8-2 on the season, while the duo improved to 5-5 at first doubles. 

Muthukumaraswany was dominant at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory, while Beiter was equally impressive with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at the No. 4 spot. Muthukumaraswany and Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) also combined to beat Gerald Fleming and Korey Steele at No. 2 doubles, 8-0. 

Birnbaum beat Mukhtar Abdullahi 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and then teamed with Beiter to take No. 3 doubles 8-0.   

Norwich closes out the 2018 season by hosting Johnson State at 2 p.m. in Shapiro Field House in non-conference action.
