Box Score NASHUA, N.H. - The Norwich University men's lacrosse team cruised to their fifth straight win on Wednesday night, defeating the Raiders of Rivier University by a 13-9 final score in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play.
Coming into the game off of a big 7-5 win over Mount Ida College on Saturday, the Cadets suddenly found themselves in a 2-0 hole early as the hosts jumped out to an early lead. Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) and Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) scored back-to-back goals to knot things at 2-2, and the two teams continued to swap goals for the remainder of the half. At the break, Norwich held a slim 4-3 advantage.
The Raiders came right out in the second half and tied things up, then scored twice more to regain the lead. After some more goal swapping, the game entered the final quarter with both teams sitting at 8 goals apiece.
In the final quarter, the Norwich offensive unit took over. Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) and Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) combined for four straight unanswered goals to put the Cadets up 12-8, and a Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) goal with 42 seconds remaining sealed up the 13-9 victory for the maroon and gold.
Back-to-back GNAC Player of the Week Josh Jenkins led the way once again for Norwich with three goals and two assists for a five-point night. Michael Cashman picked up three goals of his own, and Jack Dwyer had two goals along with posting a dominating 19-25 mark on faceoffs and picking up a team-leading five ground balls.
The win for Norwich is their fifth in a row, both overall and in GNAC play, as the Cadets improve to 9-5 overall and 6-1 within the conference. With barely a week to go in the regular season, the Cadets continue to hold a tenuous grip on the top spot in the conference standings. Their next test comes in the shape of a Saturday matchup against the Monks of the Saint Joseph's College of Maine, a game with a start time of 4:00 PM at Sabine Field. That game will be preceded by the Cadets' Senior Day ceremony, recognizing the 14 senior student-athletes on the roster, before NU goes for their sixth straight win.
