NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis won its second straight match with a dominant 9-0 sweep of Mass. College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (2-1) dominated the three doubles matches, giving up just four games combined en route to a 3-0 sweep of the pairs action.
Sophomore Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) and freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) led the Cadets to the sweep combining to take No. 1 doubles 8-2 and then taking No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively.
Ackerman battled Aaron Goldsmith to a close 6-4. 7-6 victory at No. 1 singles to improve to 2-1 on the season in singles action. Gilmore made quick work of Freeman, 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 2 singles.
Junior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and senior Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) continued their impressive doubles record, shutting out Mahrouz and Santana 8-0 to take No. 2 doubles. Beiter beat Najimy 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3 singles to improve to 3-0 on the season in solo action. Ellis played his first singles match of the year, downing Mahrouz 6-1, 6-0 to win No. 4 singles.
Freshman Maddy Muthukumaraswany (Montreal, Quebec) and Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) combined to take No. 3 doubles 8-2 over Najimy and Castle. Muthukumaraswany took No. 5 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Santana, while Tim Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) won No. 6 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Castle.
Norwich will continue its five-match home stand on Wednesday when it hosts Castleton University at 4 p.m. in Shapiro Field House.
