STOWE, Vt. - The Norwich University men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2018 season in resounding fashion with a 9-0 triumph over Johnson State on Thursday afternoon at Top Notch Tennis Center.
Norwich (1-1) surrendered just two games in doubles action as the Cadets started the match with a statement sweep of all three doubles pairs en route to the victory. Sophomore Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) and freshman Alexi Gilmore (Haverhill, Mass.) took No. 1 doubles 8-0 over Gerrit Lane and Austin Walter. Junior Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and senior Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) won No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-1 over John Folsom and Ethan Hutchinson, while freshman Maddy Muthukumaraswany (Montreal, Quebec) and sophomore Tim Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) took No. 3 doubles 8-1 over Evan Daigneault and Colin Compagna.
Ackerman won No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-2 over Lane, while Gilmore swept Walter 6-0, 6-0 in straight sets to take No. 2 singles and improve to 2-0 in his career. Beiter won No. 3 singles 6-2, 6-1 over Joseph Halloway.
Muthukumaraswany battled to a 6-3 win in the first set and then blanked Folsom 6-0 in the second to take No. 4 singles. Noah Stillman (Danbury, Conn.) and Birnbaum took No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively to close out the victory.
Norwich returns home to Shapiro Field House for its next five matches, starting with hosting MCLA on Sunday at 1 p.m. in non-conference action. The Cadets will also host Castleton University at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28.
