CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Norwich University wrestling team competed with some of the most prestigious and talented wrestling programs in the country at the 24th-annual All-Academy Championships on Sunday at The Citadel in South Carolina.
The Cadets joined the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in taking on NCAA Division I wrestlers from the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, The Citadel, the U.S. Naval Academy and the Virginia Military Institute. Norwich finished the day with 5 team points, placing eighth in the loaded field of competitors. The Naval Academy dominated the match, scoring 118 team points and first place overall.
Both of Norwich's head to head victories came in the consolation bracket after both wrestlers dropped their first match. Cole Nickerson (Nashua, N.H.) was able to dispatch Will Jacobs of The Citadel at 125-lb by fall (6:46) and Zach Morris (South Glen Falls, N.Y.) defeated Chad Puglio of Merchant Marine by fall (3:47) in the 149-lb class.
Norwich will be back in action on February 4th, when they travel to New England College for a bout with the Pilgrims, before returning home on the 7th to host the Castleton Spartans for the Green Mountain Championship.
