Men's Tennis: Norwich romps past Lyndon State, 9-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team won its fourth straight match with a 9-0 victory over Lyndon State College on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action in Shapirp Field House. 

Norwich (4-2, 0-0 GNAC) swept the season series from Lyndon State with the win and extended their run to 18 straight wins over the Hornets dating back to 2008. 

Senior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) led the Cadets with victories at No. 1 singles and teamed with three-time GNAC Rookie of the Week selection Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) to take No. 1 doubles as well. 

Hyte won 6-2, 6-1 over Tyler Hall to take the top singles flight and then Ackerman and Hyte made quick work of Hall and Jake LaCerda at No. 1 doubles for an 8-1 win. 

Ackerman had to work hard for his win at No. 2 singles, downing LaCerda 6-4 and 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker) to improve to 5-1 on the year. 

Senior Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) downed Michael Sigsbury 6-3, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, while Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) beat Dylan Cherko 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. 

Carter and Eagan improved to 5-1 on the year at No. 2 doubles with an 8-4 win over Sigsbury and Cherko. 

Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) took No. 3 singles by an 8-1 score over Neal Mulligan and Ken Niemann. 

Beiter won No. 5 singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Mulligan. Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) swept Niemann 6-0, 6-0 to take No. 6 singles. 

Norwich will host Johnson State on Wednesday, April 12 at 3 p.m. in Shapiro Field House looking for its fifth straight win.
