NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team held on for a 7-6 victory over visiting Rivier University on Saturday at Sabine Field. Norwich improves to 8-7 overall on the year, moving to 4-2 against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foes on the season. 

The Cadets defeated Rivier (7-7, 2-4 GNAC) for the seventh time in eight meetings dating back to Apr. 19, 2011. Norwich will look to finish the regular season strong, taking on Anna Maria this Tuesday, Apr. 25 at 5 p.m. before a journey to Providence, R.I. for a 1 p.m. tilt against Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Saturday, Apr. 29. 

Sophomore Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) and classmate Aidan Moulton (Danvers, Mass.) potted two goals apiece, joining seven other Cadets with at least one point of offense. Junior Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) set up two goals for Norwich while senior captain James Connors (Marshfield, Mass.) led Norwich defensively with three caused turnovers. 

Moulton and Moore created a 2-0 lead for Norwich through the game's first 15:47 as both tallies were set up by Cashman. Rivier countered with a goal from Joe Kelland before Moulton struck once again, creating a 3-1 lead for the Cadets with a man-up strike. Rivier cut into the hosts lead before halftime, 3-2. 

Norwich opened up a 6-2 lead with three-straight goals to begin the second half, capped by an unassisted marker from freshman Connor Bourque (Goffstown, N.H.) with 12:18 left in the third quarter. A late man-up strike by Rivier's Sean Brady shrunk the Norwich lead to 6-3 with 32 seconds left in the third stanza. 

Junior Matt Shea (Arlington, Mass.) hooked up with senior Joe Wood (White River Junction, Vt.) shortly into the fourth quarter, elevating Norwich to a 7-3 lead before three-straight goals by Rivier brought the visitors back into contention with 7:04 left in regulation time. The stout Cadets defense killed off a major penalty and limited Rivier to only one shot taken in the final seven-plus minutes, holding on for the narrow victory. 

Norwich netminder Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) made four saves on 10 shots, earning his second win of the year. Matt Cloutman kept Rivier in the contest, making an impressive 14 saves on 21 shots against.
