Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Paced by 17-different point scorers on Saturday, the Norwich University men's lacrosse team earned an 18-6 victory over visiting Albertus Magnus College on Sabine Field.
The Cadets move to 6-7 on the season, improving to 3-2 on the year against Great Northeast Athletic Conference foes. Albertus Magnus (3-8, 0-4 GNAC) remains in search of its first league victory of 2017.
Junior Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) fired a team-leading three goals in the win while freshman Jack Anzalone (Ridgewood, N.J.) and sophomore Connor Loughran (Stowe, Vt.) cashed in with two goals and an assist for three points (2-1=3). Freshman Michael Donahoe (Nazareth, Pa.) caused two turnovers for Norwich on defense.
The Cadets won 22 of the game's 27 face-offs, paced by junior Jack Dwyer's (Shelburne, Vt.) 13 wins and six ground balls at the "X". Freshman Christian Williams (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) won six-of-eight chances for the Cadets while classmate Thomas DeMag (South Burlington, Vt.) netted two face-off victories.
Norwich opened up a 9-0 lead with only 7:51 left in the first half as two man-up goals to open the second quarter stoked the furious Norwich scoring run. Senior Joe Wood (White River Junction, Vt.) and senior Connor McMahon (Norwich, Conn.) potted goals down the stretch to create a convincing 11-1 lead at halftime.
The Cadets sprinted to a 17-1 lead with a long-range snipe by senior captain Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) with 10:04 left in regulation time. Albertus Magnus followed with five of the game's next six goals, setting the final score of 18-6. The Cadets won a game-high 16 ground balls in the final 15 minutes.
Freshman Brandon Milburn (Bridgewater, N.J.) improved to 2-0 on the season for Norwich, making one save on two shots. Junior Sam Mattson (Essex, Vt.) relieved Milburn to begin the fourth quarter, making two saves. The goaltending tandem of Jack Kerner and John Brunetti combined for 12 saves in the loss.
Norwich hosts Castleton this Tuesday, Apr. 18 at 7 p.m. under the lights.
