Men's Tennis: Cadets Cruise Past Johnson State, 9-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – For the second time in 2017, the Norwich University men's tennis team posted a 9-0 victory over Johnson State College. The Cadets moved to 5-2 on the year following the shutout of the Badgers on Wednesday in the Shapiro Field House.

Norwich has now won 16-straight matches against Johnson State dating back to the first-ever meeting on Apr. 19, 1990. The Cadets hold the decisive advantage in the all-time series, leading the Badgers by a 30-5 margin across that timeframe – Norwich has won 63-straight singles and doubles matches over Johnson State since Apr. 11, 2013.

Senior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) partnered with freshman Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) at No. 1 doubles, earning an 8-3 victory over the Johnson State representation. Senior Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) and classmate Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) blanked their opposition at No. 2 doubles before sophomore Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and junior Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) netted an 8-1 win at No. 3 doubles.

Hyte continued the Cadets positive momentum in singles play, dispatching Johnson State's Gerrit Lane by a 6-0, 6-3 score. Ackerman copped a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 singles while Carter secured a 6-1, 6-2 decision competing at No. 3 singles for the Cadets. Eagan and Beiter won matches at No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while freshman Timothy Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) rounded out singles action with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.

Carter and Eagan improved to 6-1 on the season at No. 2 doubles and Beiter and Ellis collected their fifth win of the year at No. 3 doubles. Hyte, Eagan and Ackerman also secured their sixth singles wins of the season.

Norwich opens Great Northeast Athletic Conference play this Saturday, Apr. 15, traveling to Suffolk for a 2 p.m. showdown. The Cadets return home for two-straight tilts in the Shapiro Field House, hosting Green Mountain and Johnson & Wales (R.I.) on Apr. 19 and Apr. 22, respectively.
