NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis scored its first victory of the 2017 season with a dominant 9-0 shutout win over Lyndon State on Thursday afternoon at Shapiro Field House in non-conference action.
Head coach Adam Chicoine picked up his first collegiate coaching victory with the win as Norwich extended its winning streak to 17 straight matches vs. the Hornets.
Norwich (1-2, 0-0 GNAC) opened the match up 2-0 after Lyndon State only had five players, which resulted in forfeit victories at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles. The Cadets swept No. 1 and No. 2 doubles by scores of 8-0 in each match to take a 4-0 lead.
Sophomore
Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Neal Mulligan at No. 5 singles in a match that started the same time as the two doubles matches.
Senior Ian Hyte (Marblehad, Mass.) and freshman Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) took No. 1 doubles over Dylan Cherko and Tyler Hall, while Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) and Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) won No. 2 doubles over Jake LeCerda and Michael Sigsbury.
Hyte had his hands full in the first set at No. 1 singles, battling back from down 5-4 to beat Hall 7-5. He then took the second set 6-2. Ackerman also won by scores of 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.
Carter beat LaCerda 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles and Eagan downed Cherko 6-2, 6-4 to complete the victory.
Norwich returns to action on March 22 when it hosts Castleton University in a rematch of the season opener that the Cadets lost 5-4.
