STOWE, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team won its third straight match with a dominant 9-0 victory over Johnson State on Wednesday afternoon at the Top Notch Tennis Center.
Norwich (3-2, 0-0 GNAC) got off to a commanding 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches pretty convincingly. Senior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) and freshman Dylan Ackerman (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands) had the toughest match, downing Gerrit Lane and Richie Perez, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles.
Seniors Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) and Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) took No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Alex Harcourt and Ben Holl to improve to 4-1 on the season. Sophomore Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) took No. 3 doubles with an 8-1 win over Ethan Hutchinson and Quinn Lambert.
The Cadets continued to keep up the momentum in singles matches. Hyte rolled past Lane 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Ackerman scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Harcourt at No. 2 singles. Carter took No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Richie Perez. Eagan had the toughest singles match, grinding out a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Cory Arruda.
Beiter swept Hutchinson 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles and Tim Birnbaum (Mahwah, N.J.) capped off the sweep with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles vs. Holl.
Johnson State dropped to 1-4 on the year.
Norwich travels to face Lyndon State on Thursday, Apr. 6 for a 4 p.m. match with the Hornets. NU beat Lyndon State 9-0 earlier this year.
