Box Score WESTON, Mass. – Sophomore Connor Loughran (Stowe, Vt.) of the Norwich University men's lacrosse team scored the game-winning goal in double overtime for the Cadets, propelling them to a 10-9 victory over the host Pride from Regis College on Saturday.
The Cadets improve to 2-4 on the year while Regis dips to 1-5 on the season.
Trailing by a 9-8 score with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter, junior Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) dramatically knotted the score with his fourth goal of the contest, sending the game to overtime. After the first six-minute overtime period, Loughran scored for the fourth time in the game with 1:35 left on the clock to lift Norwich to its second win of the year.
Jenkins led the Cadets with four goals and one assist for five points (4-1=5). Junior Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) recorded six ground balls while sophomore Aidan Moulton (Danvers, Mass.) tallied a goal and an assist, setting up the overtime winner in the process.
Down by a 2-0 score in the first quarter, Jenkins, freshman Connor Bourque (Goffstown, N.H.) and Loughran put the Cadets ahead, 3-2, with 11:10 to go in the first half. With the score eventually tied at halftime, the Cadets and Pride battled to a 6-6 score before Jenkins would pot back-to-back goals, creating an 8-6 lead for the visitors.
Ahead by two goals with 10:16 remaining in the game, Regis scored three-straight tallies including what could have been the game-winner for the Pride with 33 seconds left in regulation time. Junior Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) won the ensuing face-off and the ground ball was reeled in by classmate Matt Thresher (Somers, Conn.), who sparked the transition down field for Jenkins' equalizer.
Junior Tyler LoPorto (Weston, Fla.) made nine saves in the victory for the Cadets, yielding nine goals, while Regis' D.J. Barrile made 18 saves for his team on 28 shots faced. Norwich outshot the Pride by a 42-to-28 margin and won the ground ball battle, 40-to-24. The Cadets also failed on only two of 25 clears in the contest.
Brandon Mehler led Regis with three goals while three other players notched two goals for the Pride.
The Cadets host Plymouth State this Monday, Mar. 27 at 4 p.m. on Sabine Field. The contest was originally slated for 4 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 11, but inclement weather precipitated the change to Monday.
