Box Score BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Playing in its second overtime contest in as many games, the Norwich University men's lacrosse team was downed by a 10-9 margin on the road at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Thursday. The Cadets have lost all three of its games in 2017 by one goal while the Buccaneers moved to 3-0 on the year.
The Cadets led by an 8-4 margin with 7:30 to go in regulation time, but allowed the Buccaneers to score four times to draw the game even at eight with 1:40 remaining. Sophomore Cody Moore (Canton, N.Y.) briefly put the Cadets ahead, 9-8, with 42 seconds left in the fourth quarter, but Cody Livermore dramatically tied the game with a long-range shot for Mass. Maritime only 30 seconds later.
With 34 seconds left in the first overtime stanza, Livermore's sixth goal of the game propelled the hosts to the come-from-behind victory. Ultimately, Mass. Maritime scored six of the game's last seven goals in only 5:10 of regulation time and an additional 5:26 of overtime.
Junior Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.) scored three goals for Norwich, including the first two of the game to put the Cadets ahead. His third strike of the tilt placed Norwich ahead with 5:01 left in the third quarter, 4-3. He would add an assist later in the contest.
With the game tied at four, junior Matt Shea (Arlington, Mass.) scored an unassisted man-up goal to close the third quarter. His strike sparked a stretch of four-straight goals for the Cadets as juniors Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.), Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) and Nolan Aurelia (Stratford, Conn.) scored to create the 8-4 lead.
Norwich goalie Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) picked up seven ground balls, leading the team, while making 10 saves on 20 shots. Mass. Maritime's Michael Dolan made 10 saves on 19 shots, earning the victory in goal.
Livermore led the Buccaneers with four goals while Ryan McNeill potted three goals and an assist. Ben Barratini scored twice, adding an assist, and Benjamin Avakian picked up six ground balls for the home team.
Norwich heads to the United States Coast Guard Academy this Saturday, Mar. 18 for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
