Men's Soccer: Plymouth State slips past Norwich 3-2 in OT

Box Score

NORTHFIELD, Vt.  – The Plymouth State University men's soccer team scored two goals in the final four minutes of regulation and then added another in the first overtime to rally past Norwich for a 3-2 overtime victory on Tuesday night in non-conference action.

Jesper Fredholm scored with five seconds left in the first overtime to lift Plymouth State (3-4-1, 0-2 Little East) to a miraculous come-from-behind victory. Fredholm got a foot on a shot from the top of the 18 that NU senior goalkeeper Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) got a hand on, but not enough as the ball dropped into the corner of the net.

Marc Herrington scored with 3:45 left in regulation and then Dan Shaw scored with five seconds left to stun Norwich after the Cadets scored twice in the second half to take a 2-0 lead.

Plymouth State's Nick Rutherford picked up the assist on both of the Panthers' regulation tallies. Rutherford sent a crossing pass from the end line that Herrington slid and knocked into the back of the net on the Panthers' first goal.

Rutherford possessed the ball inside the 18 with his back to the goal and then passed it over to Shaw who ripped a brilliant strike off the right post and into the back of the net.

Norwich dominated the first half, outshooting Plymouth State 9-3, but the Cadets couldn't solve PSU keeper Felix Lindeberg.

NU finally broke through in the 66th minute with Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) notching his second goal of the year with a well-placed bullet into the right corner of the net. Sophomore Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) picked up the assist after throwing the ball into Schiers.

The two combined again for the second Norwich goal as Schiers served it into the box off a corner kick that Melia was first to get a head on and beat Lindeberg over his head, catching the PSU goalkeeper flatfooted. The goal was Melia's third of the season.

Whaley made two saves to drop the first game of his collegiate career and fall to 2-1. Lindeberg made seven saves for Plymouth State to improve to 3-4-1.

Norwich will look to get back on track on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. when it hosts Anna Maria to kickoff NU Parents & Family Weekend.
