WESTON, Mass.- On the back of a thrilling comeback, the Norwich Men's Soccer team prevailed in a penalty kick shootout over third-seeded Regis Saturday afternoon in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Semifinals.
The Pride opened the scoring early, with Cade Bretton converting off a corner kick in the twelfth minute. After the goal, the Cadets held a decided territorial advantage, putting Regis keeper Chris Alcon to the test.
Shea Perkins (Carl Junction, Mo.) and
Oleksandr Kharchuk (Ukraine) each tallied shots, but the Pride's lead remained at the half, despite a 10-2 shot attempt edge for Norwich.
More back-and-forth action ensued in the second half. As the frame wore on, Norwich pressed to tie the game and broke through in the 88
th minute. After the ball was pinging around the Cadets' attacking third,
Cameron Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.) got the ball just above the box. He found
Diego Fuentes (Valencia, Spain) behind the defense for the tying goal, sending the game to extra time.
In the first sudden-death period, Regis held the upper hand, but
Kirk Rodgers (Lebanon, Ohio) came up with two saves before a Cadet corner and a misfire by
Ben Rubinstein (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). After Alcon stopped Fuentes early in the second extra period, Norwich defended away consecutive Pride corners before Norwich's chances misfired, sending the game to penalty kicks.
In the shootout,
Tyler Ziminski (Huntington, N.Y.) subbed in for Rodgers and came up with a save after Fuentes converted on the first chance. With Regis up 2-1 in the shootout, Rubinstein tied it up before Ziminski preserved the tie with a save, leaving the door open for
Sharmarke Hassan (Burlington, Vt.) to convert, putting the Cadets ahead. The ensuing chance for Regis misfired, sending Norwich through to the next round.
In the GNAC Semifinals, Norwich will travel to second-seeded Rivier on Nov. 4 with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
