NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team defeated Lyndon State College 9-0 on Wednesday night in non-conference action at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich won its third straight match to even its record to 4-4 on the season, while Lyndon State dropped to 1-5 on the year. The Cadets also completed the season sweep of Lyndon State after also downing the Hornets 9-0 on March 10.
Junior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) led the Cadets with victories at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. He beat Trevor Updike 6-3, 6-1 in singles action to improve to 5-3 on the season. He also teamed with Jeff Purdy (Grantham, N.H.) to beat Updike and Dominick Agresta at top doubles 8-4.
Purdy took No. 3 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Michael Sigbsury to improve to 5-3 on the year as well in solo action.
Juniors Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) and Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) remained Norwich's most effective doubles pair, taking No. 2 doubles 8-4 over Sigsbury and Jake LaCerda. The duo improved to 5-2 on the year. Carter also took No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Agresta. Eagan won No. 4 singles 6-3, 6-1 over LaCerda.
Freshman Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) took No. 6 singles 8-1 in a tiebreaker set after the match was already decided. He also teamed with Hadley Ellis (Jamestown, Ky.) to win No. 3 doubles 8-2 over Kyle Berteau and Josh Pooler.
Sophomore Mason Madison (Lebanon, Conn.) rounded out the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at No. 5 singles over Berteau to improve to 4-2 on the season.
The Cadets open league play on Saturday when they travel down to Johnson & Wales for a matchup with the Wildcats.
