Men's Tennis: Norwich sweeps Badgers 9-0

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team swept Johnson State College 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action at Shapiro Field House.

The Cadets (2-4) put forth a dominant effort, losing only six games in the entire match to pick up their second victory of the season and end a two-match losing streak.

Junior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) continued his strong season at No.1 singles, improving to 4-2 on the year with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Cole Hennessey. Hyte also teamed with sophomore Jeff Purdy (Grantham, N.H.) to take No. 1 doubles over Hennessey and Alex Pakatar 8-0. Purdy and Hyte improved to 2-4 on the year at No. 1 doubles.

Purdy also scored a 6-0, 6-0 straight sets victory at No. 3 singles over Alex Harcourt to even his record to 3-3 at the third singles pairing.

Junior Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) improved to 2-4 at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Pakatar in a battle of men's soccer goalkeepers. Both players play for their respective school's soccer teams in the fall in addition to playing tennis in the spring. Carter also teamed with Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) to take No. 2 doubles 8-0 over Harcourt and Greg Davis. Carter and Eagan have NU's best record in tandem play at 3-2.

Eagan won No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Connor Neathawk.

Freshman Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) and sophomore Mason Madison (Lebanon, Conn.) combined to take No. 3 doubles 8-1. They improved to 2-1 on the season together. Madison won No. 4 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Davis, while Beiter beat Pedro Perez 6-1, 6-1 to take No. 6 singles.

Norwich opens a stretch of four straight road matches on Saturday when it travels to Green Mountain College for a 10 a.m. match against the Eagles. The Cadets will continue to play Lyndon State on April 6, Johnson & Wales April 9, and Johnson State April 12 before returning home to close out the regular season vs. Suffolk on Saturday, April 23.
