Box Score CASTINE, Maine. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team recorded its first win of the 2016 season after an 18-7 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on the road Friday afternoon.
The win puts Norwich at 1-5 on the year, while Maine Maritime falls to 0-5 and will continue to look for its first win of the year.
After the Cadets built an early 5-2 lead led by back-to-back goals from freshman attacker Connor Loughran (Stowe, Vt.), a man-up goal from Maine Maritime's Dean Samuelson (Ellsworth, Maine) in the final minute of the first quarter sparked a three-goal run for the Mariners, tying things up at 5-5 with 8:02 to play in the second.
Senior midfielder Matt Flaherty (Portland, Maine) and sophomore attacker Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) scored to give Norwich a 7-5 lead, and Samuelson scored his third goal of the game at 3:14 to send the Mariners into halftime down 7-6.
The Cadets outscored the Mariners 10-2 in the final two quarters to take the 17-8 victory.
Samuelson led the Mariners with four goals, while Michael Martel (Biddeford, Maine) added a pair of goals with Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) and Alex Grant-Roy (Biddeford, Maine) each recording a goal for the Mariners. Brendan Broderick (Messena, N.Y.) added a game-high four assists and Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) led the Mariners with eight ground balls, while recording 10 saves in net.
Flaherty and Loughran each added hat tricks for the Cadets, while sophomore Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) and senior Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) scored twice for the visitors and seven players grabbed one goal apiece in the victory. Sophomore Jack Dwyer (Shelburne, Vt.) tallied a game-high nine ground balls, while going 21-for-31 on the faceoff. Freshman Ian Kriger (Burlington, Mass.) tallied eight saves in net to record his first collegiate career win as a Cadet.
Norwich will host New England College next Thursday on March 31st on Sabine Field for the 4:00 p.m. faceoff.
