NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team picked up its first victory of the 2016 season in dominant fashion with a 9-0 win over Lyndon State on Thursday afternoon in non-league action at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (1-2, 0-0 GNAC North) stretched its winning streak to 15 straight matches vs. Lyndon State with the victory as the Hornets dropped to 0-1 in their first match of the season.
Junior Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) led the way with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles over Michael Sigsbury. Hyte also teamed with sophomore Jeff Purdy (Grantham, N.H.) to take No. 1 doubles over Sigsbury and Jake LaCerda by a score of 8-1.
Purdy won No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Kyle Berteau. Hyte and Purdy improved to 2-1 on the season in singles matches.
Junior Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) picked up his first singles victory of the season at No. 2 singles, downing LaCerda 6-0, 6-0. He also teamed with Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.) to take No. 2 doubles 8-0 over Berteau and Derek Kalnicki. Eagan won No. 6 singles by forfeit.
Mason Madison (Lebanon, Conn.) and Sam Beiter (Youngstown, N.Y.) won No. 3 doubles by forfeit. They also won No. 4 singles and No. 5 singles over Kalnicki and Ben Parks 6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1 respectively to complete the sweep of the match.
Norwich is off until March 23 when it hits the road for the first time this season to take on Castleton University. The Cadets dropped a 7-2 decision to the Spartans last time out. Norwich's next home match will be March 30, when the Cadets host Johnson State at 3 p.m. That match will be streamed live on www.nsnsports.net/colleges/norwich
