Wrestling: Jones Takes Third at Futures Invitational

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Norwich University wrestling team competed at the Futures Invitational hosted by Roger Williams University on Sunday, Feb. 21. The Cadets finished seventh out of 11 teams for 36.5 points.

Nine wrestlers took the mat for the Cadets as sophomore Donteveous Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) placed third in the 174 class for 15 team points.

Jones opened the day with a quarterfinal loss to Johnson & Wales' Ryan Schaal, who finished second in the tournament, but rebounded in his next two matches of the consolation bracket. Jones would take the bye in the first round of the consolation before pinning Williams College's Christopher Washington in just 18 seconds before earning his second straight victory, pinning WPI's Brian Stapleton in 47 seconds, for the third place spot.

Freshman PJ Testino (Dingmans Ferry, Pa.) collected 6.50 team points in the 141 class. Like Jones, Testino started the day with a pinfall to Tom Sewell of Roger Williams in the first round before rebounding in his next three matches of the consolation bracket. After a first round bye, Testino would pick up his first win of the day in a 6-4 sudden victory over WPI's Benjamin Shaffer. Testino would get his second straight victory on a 16-1 technical fall over Wesleyan's Johnathan Oh and would to face Sewell for the second time in the consolation semifinal round. Testino battled against Sewell but came up short in the end as Sewell picked up the 17-4 major decision to end Testino's day.

Senior Taylor Jacobs (Killingworth, Conn.) wrestled in the 157 weight class and picked up five team points on the day. Jacobs fell to Christopher Behen of Johnson & Wales in the first round by major decision before picking up a pair of wins in the first two consolation matches. Jacobs pinned Roger Williams' Ben Anderson in just 2:29 before earning his second straight victory on a 14-2 major decision over his own teammate, Connor Gobeille (Shelburne, Vt.). Jacobs saw his day come to an end in the third consolation round after coming up short in the 9-7 decision to Johnson & Wale's Zachary Ford.

The Cadets are next in action on Feb. 27-28 at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regionals, hosted by Springfield College. Action is set to start at 10:00 a.m. on both days.
