Box Score STANDISH, Maine – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Saint Joseph's (Maine) to a 110-minute scoreless draw in the 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship game.
However, Saint Joseph's (Maine) emerged as the tournament champion with a 4-2 victory in penalty kicks to claim their third GNAC title and first since 2011, which the Monks also beat Norwich in.
The Cadets were making their fourth GNAC final appearance in the last six seasons. They lost in 2011 to Saint Joseph's, 2012 to Albertus Magnus and 2014 to Johnson & Wales.
Senior goalkeeper Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) recorded five saves to pick up his 10th shutout of the season. He recorded a shutout in 10 of the 13 games he played in and had a shutout streak of 745 minutes during the season.
Senior midfielder Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) and freshman forward Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored on their penalty kick attempts. Whaley turned aside one of the shots he faced in the PK shootout.
The Monks outshot Norwich 26-9 and earned eight corner kicks to Norwich's five.
Schiers, Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) and Matt Mazzola (Ridgefield, Conn.) were named to the GNAC All-Tournament team.
Saturday marked the final game for the six seniors in Zimmerman, Schiers, Whaley, Alec Brigante (Colchester, Vt.), Noah Clemmer (Marlboro, N.Y.) and Chris Lewis (Springfield, Mass.). They made it two GNAC championship games and extended the program's streak of making it to the GNAC semifinal round of the tournament for 13 straight seasons.
Saint Joseph's Maine (16-1-4) extended their unbeaten streak to 19 straight games. Norwich (12-4-4) closes its season as the only GNAC team to put blemishes in the Monks' otherwise perfect record against the conference.
Norwich ended the season on a 10-game unbeaten streak with an 8-0-2 record.
