NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Senior forward Jacob Zimmerman (Litchfield, N.H.) scored a goal to reach 100 career points and lead the Norwich University men's soccer team to a 4-0 win over Suffolk University on Saturday afternoon at Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
Zimmerman scored on a header off a service from the corner by freshman Luke Gleadle (Gilbert, Ariz.) to finally notch his 100th career point after not scoring a goal since Sept. 12. The goal sparked the Norwich offense as the Cadets added three more tallies to claim a huge three points and jump Suffolk for second place in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) standings.
Norwich (6-4-2, 3-0-2 GNAC) has won four of its last five games and currently has 11 points in the league standings, trailing on Saint Joseph's (Maine) who has 15.
Sophomore forward Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) continued his hot streak, scoring twice, while freshman Ronaldo Powell (Nantucket, Mass.) added a goal and an assist to lead the Cadets' offense. Gleadle also chipped in with two assists to bring his season total to four.
Melia scored in the 38th minute with his fifth tally of the season off an assist from Powell. Powell got a head on the ball to beat the Suffolk goalkeeper on a cross from the left and then Melia tapped the ball into a wide open net for the goal to push the NU lead to 2-0.
Melia struck again in the 54th minute, scoring off a pretty setup from Noah Schiers (South Weber, Utah) and Zimmerman. Schiers sent a ball into the box from midfield that Zimmerman played down with a header and then Melia ran onto the ball and buried it into the corner of the net to make it 3-0.
Powell capped the scoring with his second goal of the year on a breakaway off a long over the top ball from Gleadle that he sprinted down, made a move past the goalie and calmly tucked it into the back of the net.
Norwich outshot Suffolk 16-9 for the game. Senior goalkeeper Billy Whaley (Northfield, Vt.) picked up his fourth win of the season by making one save. Jon Brodeur took the loss after making three saves on seven shots on net.
Suffolk (5-6-0, 3-2-0) had it three-game winning streak snapped in the loss.
Norwich is right back at it on Monday when it hosts Mount Ida at 7 p.m. in another big GNAC showdown. It will serve as the Cadets' second to last home game of the season with the final coming on Saturday, Oct. 15 when they host Saint Joseph's (Maine) on Senior Day.
