Box Score NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's soccer team battled Castleton University to an intense 1-1 draw on Tuesday night in non-conference action on Sabine Field at Haynes Family Stadium.
After nearly 88 scoreless minutes, both teams tallied in the final few minutes of regulation before battling to another scoreless 20-minute overtime session.
Castleton (5-2-1, 1-0-0 NAC) looked like it had clinched the victory when junior forward Solo Felekini finished off a sweet one-timer top shelf into the upper right hand corner of the net off a pass from the right wing by William Von Heland with just 2:03 remaining in the game.
The goal was Felekini's third of the season and just Castleton's second shot on goal to that point in the game. Von Heland sped down the right wing after the official allowed the play to continue with advantage and the Spartans took full advantage of it with Felekini's deft-touch to stun the Norwich crowd.
However, Norwich (4-3-1, 1-1-0 GNAC) refused to go away quietly and the Cadets answered back with 38 seconds left on a free-kick goal by Moab Schiers (South Weber, Utah) to tie the game back up.
Freshman forward Ethan Melia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) draw the foul when he was kicked in the head at the top of the penalty area allowing NU to set up from 20 yards out for the set piece.
Sophomore Colin Lozito (Wilmington, Vt.) tapped the ball for the in-direct touch and then Schiers came in on it and blasted into the right corner of the net, past the diving Castleton University goalkeeper Amir Pasic to knot the game up for his sixth goal of the season.
Norwich had the best chance of the overtime session with Melia drilling a low shot off the right post from 20 yards out on a set-piece late in the second overtime. It marked the second time Melia hit the post in the game as he hit it earlier in the first half and then followed up his own rebound right into Pasic's arms.
Norwich outshot Castleton 22-11, including 8-1 in the second half. Freshman goalkeeper Stefan Skoff (San Jose, Calif.) made two saves for NU, while Pasic made eight saves for Castleton.
Norwich will look to break its three-game winless skid on Saturday when it returns to GNAC action at Suffolk University at 3:30 p.m.
