Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior attack Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman midfielder Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.) each collected a hat-trick as senior goalkeeper Ryan Fecteau (Danves, Mass.) turned away 15 shots to lead the Norwich University men's lacrosse team to a 9-6 triumph over Coast Guard Academy Saturday night. The Cadets extended their winning streak to four straight games with the victory.
The Coast Guards (1-4) struck first as senior midfielder Pat Dreiss (Wantagh, N.Y.) drilled the shot into the net before Norwich responded a minute later as junior midfielder Matt Flaherty (Portland, Maine) notched his first goal of the game off a pass from Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) to even up the score. Six minutes later, Flaherty would find the back of the net for his second goal of the game to give the Cadets a 2-1 advantage after the first period. NU would score three unanswered goals to open the second period with Jenkins and Joe Wood (White River Junction, Vt.) scoring the first two before Jenkins scored his second goal of the game on a feed from Flaherty in the man-up opportunity as the Cadets swelled the lead, 5-1 with 6:26 remaining in the half. The Bears would record their second goal from junior midfielder Robert McKenna (Chesapeake, Va.) to close the first half trailing 5-2.
The second half started with the host finding the net for its third goal of the game before Jenkins caught the feed from withFuller and drilled the ball into the back of the net to record his first hat-trick of the season. Fuller would get on the stats sheet after scoring his first goal, with Nolan Aurelia (Stratford, Conn.) credited with the assist, to make it 7-3 Norwich before the Coast Guard closed out the third period on a McKenna's second goal.
Heading into the fourth period, the Cadets would push their lead to four on a Fuller goal before Coast Guards' Justin Huemme (Sherborne, Mass.) took a feed from McKenna and pulled the trigger that ended up in the back of the cage to make it a three-point game. Norwich wasted no time, scoring 11 seconds later after senior midfielder Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) won the faceoff and sped down the middle of the field on the fast break before connecting with Jared Thompson, who would then find Fuller wide open to score the hat-trick for the 9-5 score.
With 10:09 remaining in the game, the Coast Guards looked to get back into the game but Norwich's defense kept the Bears at bay. The Coast Guards took advantage of the man-up opportunity and scored its sixth and final goal of the night as the Cadets held on for their fourth straight victory.
Coast Guards narrowly outshot Norwich 34-31 but the Cadets had a strong presence on the face with Bracy winning 13-of-19 attempts. Groundballs were even at 24 apiece, and both teams recorded a man-up goal. Fecteau would pick up his first win of the season after playing all 60 minutes in between the pipes, coming up with 15 saves in the 21 shots faced for the Cadets. Coast Guards' Ryan Carpenter (Evergreen, Colo.) started in goal and collected four saves and faced 13 shots on goal.
Norwich (4-1) will look to win its fifth straight game when it hosts Curry College on Wednesday, March 25 at 4:00 p.m.
