Box Score PAXTON, Mass. – The Norwich University men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-2 halftime lead and never looked back in claiming a 14-3 victory over Anna Maria College on Thursday evening for the Cadets' first win of the season.
After an AMCAT goal, senior attackman Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman Ian Kennedy (Gloucester, Mass.) each scored four goals before Fuller posted a natural hat-trick to put the Cadets ahead, 7-1 in the second period. Kennedy would notch his first hat-trick of the season to make it 8-1 before Anna Maria's Jonathan McDonald (Marlborough, Mass.) found the back of the net at the 2:45 mark of the stanza to close out the first half.
Norwich (1-1, 1-0 GNAC) would open the second half by scoring all five goals from five different players, Matt Flaherty (Portland, Maine), Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.), Connor McMahon (Norwich, Conn.), Jared Thompson (Linthicum, Md.), and Alex Bowen (Davidson, N.C.), all in the third period.
Anna Maria (0-3, 0-1 GNAC) would get on the board in the fourth period on an Andrew Marcotte (Plainville, Mass.) goal before Norwich took advantage of a man-up opportunity as Flaherty found the back of the net for his second goal of the game to close out the contest, 14-3.
The Cadets outshot Anna Maria 39-18 and won 17 of the 21 face off attempts with senior midfielder Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) winning 13 and Jon French (Bow, N.H.) coming up with four face offs. French and freshman Matt Thresher (Somers, Conn.) would scoop up a team-high four ground balls as the Cadets combined for 45 ground balls to the AMCATS' 23.
Fuller led the way with five goals, while Kennedy had three goals followed by Flaherty's two goals and three assists. McMahon, Warden, Michael Cashman (East Kingston, N.H.), Josh Jenkins (Centennial, Colo.), and Joe Wood (White River Junction, Vt.) each notched an assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Chris Gersh (Hudson, N.H.) played all 60 minutes in goal NU, posting six saves with three goals allowed.
Marcotte and McDonald each scored for the AMCATS. Netminder Joseph Morris (Medford, Mass.) came up with 13 saves in between the pipes.
Norwich will continue league play on Saturday as the Cadets host Albertus Magnus College for the 1:00 p.m. home opener at Sabine Field.
