Wrestling: Cadets finish ninth at NEWA Dual Championships

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Norwich University wrestling team competed in the New England Wrestling Association Dual Championships on Sunday.

The Cadets finished in ninth place out of 15 teams after defeating Southern Maine 33-19 in the consolation finals and posting a 3-1 record on the day.

Norwich began competition against host Springfield College and dropped a 36-10 final.

Senior William Burns (Mascoutah, Ill.) defeated Vincent Silano by a 14-5 major decision at 174 pounds.

Next the Cadets took on Trinity and won by a 54-0 final.

Sophomore Richard Garzon (Hawthorne, N.J.) picked up an 11-8 decision at 149 pounds.

Freshman Donte Jones (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) defeated Chevelle Womack 12-11 in a match that went into sudden victory overtime at 157 pounds.

Senior Jacob Towse (West Springfield, Mass.) pinned Dylan Houle in 2:24 in the 197-pound weight class.

Norwich matched up with Western New England in the next round and came away with a 24-15 win.

Freshman Chase Jefferys (Topsfield, Mass.) won a 5-4 decision over Tim McLinden at 125 pounds.

James Duncan took a 7-2 decision over Will Tavakkol in the 145-pound class.

Freshman Zach Gibson (Lithopolis, Ohio) pinned Jimmy Black in 2:40 at 165 pounds.

Towse earned his second win of the day with an 8-4 decision over Brian Donovan at 197.

Freshman Frank Girolamo (Stoughton, Mass.) topped Ken Vollaro at 285 pounds by a 9-7 decision.

In the consolation finals the Cadets took on the Huskies of Southern Maine and won a 33-19 contest.

Duncan earned his second victory with a pinfall victory at 4:44 over Brandon Curtis at 141 pounds.

Gibson also won his second match with a pinfall at 1:10 over Matt Wheeler at 165.

Burns continued the run of pins as he defeated Aaron Pierce in just 32 seconds at 174 pounds for his second win of the day.

Senior Steve Maldonado (Nyack, N.Y.) capped the Cadet victory with a 5-3 decision over Mike Frey at 285 pounds.

Gibson was named to the All-Tournament team for his efforts.

The Cadets are next in action on Sunday, February 1^st when they travel to compete in the Johnson and Wales Open. The meet is set to start at 10 a.m.
