NORTHFIELD, Vt. – After dropping its first match of 2014 on Saturday, the Norwich University tennis team got back on track with a 9-0 win over Lyndon State on Wednesday at Shapiro Field House in non-conference action.
Norwich (6-1, 0-1 GNAC North) swept the season series from the Hornets (2-3) with the victory after also beating them 9-0 on March 20.
The Cadets opened with a dominating performance in the three doubles matches, taking first and second doubles by scores of 8-1. NU also took No. 3 doubles by a score of 8-5.
Reigning Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Player of the Week Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) improved to 7-0 on the season at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Chas Legge. He also teamed with junior Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) to win No. 1 doubles 8-1 over Tyler Hall and John Corey. Grindle broke a two-match losing skid at No. 1 singles with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory over Corey to improve to 5-2 on the season.
Freshman Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) and senior Joe Dvorak (De Soto, Kan.) made quick work of Legge and Josh Bacon at No. 2 doubles with an 8-1 victory. Hyte improved to 6-1 at No. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Hall. Dvorak downed Bacon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 singles.
The No. 3 doubles team of junior Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.) and freshman Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) won 8-5 over Mike Desmond and Daniel Weiner. Carter beat Desmond 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 singles to improve to 6-1 on the season, while Ogden beat Weiner 6-1, 6-3 to improve to 6-0 at No. 6 singles.
Norwich will look to even its league record on Saturday, April 12 when it travels to Anna Maria for a 6 p.m. match against the AMCATS. The Cadets close out the home portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 19 at 1 p.m. when they host Suffolk in a crucial showdown for GNAC Playoff seeding.
