NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2014 season with an 8-1 non-conference victory over Green Mountain College on Wednesday at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (5-0, 0-0 GNAC North) swept all three doubles matches to take a commanding lead followed by victories at second and third singles by senior Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and freshman Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) clinched the match for the Cadets.
Hoskey, Hyte, Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) and Joseph Dvorak (De Soto, Kan.) all went 2-0 to lead the Cadets. Hoskey, Hyte and Carter improved to 5-0 in singles matches on the year and Carter stayed completely perfect, stretching his doubles record to 5-0 as well too.
Hoskey beat Nate Berner-Tobin 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Hyte downed Jack Hepburn 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles. Carter won fifth singles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep over Andrew Woodman. Carter and Tyler Eagan (Verona, N.J.), who played in his first collegiate match teamed to take No. 3 doubles 8-2 over Woodman and Forrest Teustch.
Junior Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.) won No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-1 over Teustch to improve to 4-0 on the year.
Hoskey teamed with junior Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) to take No. 1 doubles 8-3 over Connor Braden and Berner-Tobin. Hyte and Dvorak won No. 2 doubles 8-3 over Jack Hepburn and Grey McCampbell.
Green Mountain's (1-4) Braden handed Grindle his first singles loss of the season with a straight sets 7-5, 6-2 victory. He improved to 14-0 in his career at GMC in singles action.
Norwich will look to break the 2012 team's record for the best start to a season on Saturday when it travels to Johnson & Wales (RI) for its GNAC opener.
