Men's Lacrosse: Cadets Down Raiders 12-7, Seal Fourth-Seed in GNAC Tournament

Box Score

NASHUA, N.H.—The Norwich University men's lacrosse team concluded the regular season with a 12-7 win against the Raiders of Rivier University in Saturday afternoon's Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup.

With the win, the Cadets improve to 7-9 overall and 7-3 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Raiders to 8-7 overall and 5-5 against league opponents.

Norwich was led by junior Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) with two goals and two assists. Senior Ian Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) and sophomores Matt Flaherty (Portland, Maine) and Connor Roberts (St. Albans, Vt.) all tallied two goals each. Sophomores Jimmy Warden (North Andover, Mass.) and Mike Lavery (Penacook, N.H.) both scored once.

The Raiders were led by Kyle Graham with two goals. Cody Lynch and Dan Connelly both finished with a goal and an assist, while Sean Given and Tom Johnson recorded single tallies.

The Cadets trailed for a majority of the game. The Raiders held a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter, but the Cadets held a 3-1 scoring advantage in the final 12:28 of the frame to trail by two, 6-4, entering halftime.

An unassisted goal by sophomore Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) 58 seconds into the third quarter brought Norwich within one, and a goal by Flaherty three minutes later knotted the score for the first time at 6-6. Rivier reclaimed the lead on a goal by Graham at the 10:37 mark and held the lead through seven scoreless minutes until Norwich's Flaherty connected on a pass from senior Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) to tie the score at 7-7.

The momentum would swing in Norwich's favor in the final minute of the third quarter as Thomas and McCarthy scored at the 40-second and 17-second marks to put the Cadets on top for the first time. Norwich led 9-7 entering the final quarter.

Norwich's defense would not allow the Raiders a fourth-quarter goal, and tallies by Thomas and two by Fuller sealed the 12-7 win.

Senior goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) registered four saves in the win, while Rivier's netminder Clark Plummer totaled eight saves in the loss. Norwich outshot Rivier 47-25 on the afternoon.

Norwich senior Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) scooped up a game-high seven ground balls, while classmate Zachary McMillan (Brunkswick, Maine) chipped in with six.

The Cadets have sealed the fourth-seed in the 2014 GNAC tournament and will host #5 Mount Ida on Wednesday, April 23.
