NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team opened up its 2014 season with a 5-4 win over in-state rival Castleton State on Wednesday afternoon at Shapiro Fieldhouse.
Despite dropping two of three doubles matches, Norwich (1-0, 0-0 GNAC) rallied to win four singles matches, including the first, second and third positions to take the match.
Freshman Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) opened his NU career with two victories to lead the Cadets to the win. Carter took No. 5 singles by scores of 7-5, 6-1 over Castleton's Mike Divis. He also teamed with senior Joan Carroll (Dover, N.H.) to take No. 3 doubles 8-5 over Divis and Matt Trombley.
Junior Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.), senior Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and rookie Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) first, second and third singles respectively to rally to the victory.
Grindle beat Mike Glaser 6-4, 6-0; Hoskey downed Adam McCaffery 6-0, 6-3 and Hyte beat Kevin Rosset 6-3, 6-0 to account for the rest of the Cadets' victories. Hoskey's win marked his 25th career singles victory at Norwich.
Norwich returns to action on Tuesday, March 18 when it hosts Johnson State at 3:00 p.m. in Shapiro Fieldhouse. The Cadets will also host Lyndon State on March 20 at 3 p.m. as well.
