RUTLAND, Vt. – The Norwich University men's tennis team continued its perfect start to the 2014 season with a 7-2 victory over Castleton State on Wednesday night at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
Norwich (4-0, 0-0 GNAC North) got off to a great start, becoming the first team to take two of three doubles matches from Castleton (2-2, 0-0 NAC) this season.
The Cadets' No. 1 doubles duo of Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) avenged their lone loss of the season, downing Adam McCaffery and Mike Glaser 8-4. Jay Carter (Glassboro, N.J.) and Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.) picked up an 8-5 victory at No. 3 doubles over Mike Divis and Matt Trombley.
Norwich was even more dominant in the singles flights, taking five of the six matches, including the top three for the fourth time this season.
Grindle downed Glaser 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, while Hoskey beat McCaffery 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and freshman Ian Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.) downed Kyle Martin 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
Carter continued his impressive start to his inaugural year in the Maroon & Gold, taking No. 5 singles 6-3, 6-2 over Divis to improve to a perfect 8-0 in singles and doubles matches this season.
Ogden took No. 6 singles over Joshua Dower 6-3, 6-2 to round out the Norwich winners on the day.
Castleton's Kevin Rosset was the star of the match for the Spartans taking No. 4 singles over Joe Dvorak (De Soto, Kan.) 6-2, 6-1. He also teamed with Martin to beat Dvorak and Hyte 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.
Norwich returns home to Shapiro Field House to take on Green Mountain College (0-3) on Wednesday, April 2 in another non-conference tilt.
