Wrestling: Burns Finishes Fourth, Cadets Place 12th at NCAA Regionals

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -The Norwich University wrestling team finished its season at the NCAA Northeast Regionals hosted by Wesleyan University on Sunday.

The Cadets finished in 12th place with 31.5 team points.

Junior Will Burns (Mascoutah, Ill.) led the Cadets with a fourth-place finish at 174 pounds as he went 5-2 on the day.

Burns defeated Sean Maloney of SUNY-Oswego by a 17-6 major decision and Daniel Graff of SUNY-Oneonta by a 10-4 decision before losing to national-ranked Carlos Toribio of Ithaca College by a 9-3 decision in the quarterfinals.

Will then climbed the consolation bracket to earn a berth in the third-place match, in which he faced Toribio again, falling by a narrow 5-4 decision.

Senior Dave Pinto (Milford, Mass.) and junior Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.) were both one win away from podium finishes.

Pinto fell by a 9-7 decision to Mike Beckwith of SUNY- Cortland in the fifth round of the consolation bracket at 165 pounds.

Stewart was defeated by Brian Jennings of W.P.I. by an 8-4 decision in the third round of the consolation bracket in the 133 pound weight class.

"Overall, I am happy with our performance.  Will stepped up and had some impressive wins, avenged some old losses, and showed the region how dangerous he is." Norwich head coach Alex Whitney said, "As a team we have made a lot a progress and are still continuing to claw our way back - improving every opportunity we get."

The Cadets improved on a 14th place at the tournament last season.
