Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. –The Norwich University men's soccer team ended its season with a tough 3-0 loss to Johnson and Wales University (JWU) in the Great Northeastern Athletic Conference (GNAC) Tournament championship at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
Norwich looked to score early but JWU controlled the ball most of the first half and held the 11-1 lead in shots and the 2-0 advantage in corner kicks in the first half. Neither team were able to score in the first half.
Norwich hoped to come out firing in the second half but JWU wasted no time in the stanza to take the lead as junior Marcos Mendez carried the ball to the 18 yard box and fed a pass to senior Kyle Metz, who blasted in a shot from 10 yards out and into the back of the net to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead.
Norwich looked to respond quickly midway through the game but the Wildcats repelled any attack by the Cadets and extended the lead to 2-0 in the 60th minute when Doug Kase headed in a throw in from Metz from 10 yards out.
The Maroon and Gold have been in this position before, trailing by a goal or two in the past two games and then coming back from behind to win in the end. Norwich battled to maintain possession of the ball but JWU kept pressuring at all ends of the field as the Cadets were limited to just three shots the entire game.
JWU capped off the final scoring for the day on a breakaway by senior Kyle Corridon as he put a shot through from 15 yards out for the 3-0 victory as the Wildcats picked up their second straight GNAC Championship.
Senior Christian Hallstrom (Las Vegas, Nev.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the Cadets and came up with three saves on six shots faced.
Christian Albrecht (Albuquerque, N.M.), Chris Bristol (Clinton, Conn.), and DJ Spears (San Antonio, Texas) were named to the GNAC All-Tournament Team for Norwich.
With the loss Norwich is now 13-6-2 on the season and the Cadets will wait to see if they are chosen to participate in the ECAC Northeast Regional Tournament, which will be announced on Monday, November 10.
