Box Score BOSTON—Junior Ian Mendoza (Mt. Airy, Md.) scored four goals to lead the Norwich University men's lacrosse team to a 14-7 win against Emerson College on Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action at Rotch Field.
With the win, the Cadets remain undefeated in GNAC action at 6-0 and improve to 6-3 overall, while the loss drops Emerson to 2-7 on the season and 1-6 in league play.
In addition to Mendoza, the Cadets saw two goals and two assists by Ian Thomas (Barrington, R.I.), two goals and an assist by Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.), and two goals apiece by Joe DiTommaso (Hubbard, Ohio) and Arron Canarelli (New Hartford, N.Y.). Josh Menge (Hagaman, N.Y.) and Victor Bill (Nazareth, Pa.) added single tallies.
Emerson received two goals apiece from Brandon Lavoie and Max Smith. Benjamin Byrd aided the effort with a goal and two assists.
After outscoring Emerson 4-3 in the first quarter, the Cadets found themselves trailing by a goal following goals by Emerson's Lavioe and Eric Colleran to open the second quarter. From there, Norwich's Mendoza netted back-to-back goals, and Fuller added a final first-half tally to give the Cadets a 7-5 lead at halftime.
A 5-2 scoring advantage in the third quarter would give Norwich a five-goal advantage entering the fourth quarter, and Bill and Menge netted goals to aid the Cadets to the 14-7 victory.
Goaltender Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.) made his first start of the season and totaled six saves in his first win of 2013. Emerson goaltender Clayton Fisk recorded 10 saves for the Lions, who trailed Norwich in shots 41-27.
Norwich held a 15-10 advantage in face-offs on the evening, led by a team-best 6-8 performance by Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.). Norwich also held a 36-27 advantage in ground balls, sparked by a team-best of five by Bracy and Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.). Lavoie led Emerson in ground balls with six.
Norwich returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Rivier University at Howard Field for a 1:00 p.m. GNAC matchup.
