Men's Lacrosse: Norwich Extends Streak to Eight with 14-5 win against Rivier

NORTHFIELD, Vt.—Junior attacker Ian Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) totaled four goals and four assists as the Norwich University men's lacrosse team remained undefeated in league play with Friday afternoon's 14-5 win against the Raiders Rivier University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action.

The Cadets improve to 8-3 overall and 8-0 in GNAC play, while the loss drops the Raiders to 7-7 overall and 3-6 in league action.

With the win, the Cadets clinch the GNAC regular season title and will enter the postseason tournament as the number one seed.

In addition to Thomas, the Cadets received four goals from freshman Mike Lavery (Penacook, N.H.) and two goals from junior Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.). Senior Arron Canarelli (New Hartford, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist for the Cadets, while Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.), Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) and Josh Menge (Hagaman, N.Y.) added single goals.

Ryan Woolaver recorded a goal and two assists for the Raiders, who also saw goals by Robert Auer, Kyle Graham, Danny Hooper, and Mike Arricale.

After almost eight scoreless minutes to open the game, the Cadets used the final 7:13 of the first quarter to score seven unanswered goals, including three in the final minute of the game.  Thomas had a hand in the first four goals of the game as he assisted on Fullers' goal, scored at 6:44 to set the score at 2-0, assisted on the third goal of the game by Lavery as 6:35, and recorded his second score of the day at the 4:05 mark.

Scoring slowed in the second quarter as each team netted one goal.  Rivier's Graham put the Raiders on the board with 6:48 to play, and Menge scored his fourth goal of the season 3:43 later to set the Cadets up for the 8-1 advantage at halftime.

The Raiders tallied the first two goals of the second half, but Norwich responded with a five-goal run spanning both quarters to lead 13-3 with 7:41 left to play in the game. The Raiders outscored the Cadets 2-1 in the final six minutes of the game.

Cadets' goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) recorded five saves and allowed just one goal in 30 minutes of action before giving way to Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.) who totaled four saves.  Rivier goaltender Clark Plummer posted 12 saves in 53:31 of action.

Norwich face-off specialists Fortezzo, Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) and Brett Sewing (Brattleboro, Vt.) combined to win 19 of 22 attempts for the Cadets.  Fortezzo posted a game-high 11 wins.  Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) recorded a game-high seven ground balls.

The Cadets return to action tomorrow when they travel to Portland, Maine to take on the Monks of Saint Joseph's College at 4:00 p.m. for the final GNAC regular season matchup of the 2013 season.
