NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team swept Johnson State 9-0 on Thursday afternoon in non-conference action at Shapiro Field House.
Norwich (5-4, 1-2 GNAC) surrendered just two games combined between the nine matches in its dominant victory over the Badgers (0-5).
Sophomore Gustavo Avila (Phoenix, Ariz.) picked up his first collegiate victory in singles action at the No. 6 position with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Zach Baughn. Avila also teamed with senior Kristine Brammer (Littleton, N.H.) to take No. 3 doubles 8-1 over Greg Davis and Kemal Cross.
Junior Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) continued to roll with their recent pairing as the Cadets' No. 1 doubles team. The two combined to beat Cole Hennessy and Cory Chase 8-0 at the top doubles position.
Hoskey also won No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-1 over Hennessy to improve to 7-2 on the season and Grindle took second singles 6-0, 6-0 over Chase to improve to a team-best 8-1 on the year.
Sophomore Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.) and junior Joseph Dvorak (De Soto, Kan.) teamed up to win second doubles 8-0 and then they each took a pair of 6-0, 6-0 victories at third and fourth singles over Chris Mitchell and Alex Pakatar respectively.
Norwich returns to the courts on Saturday when they travel down to Massachusetts to take on conference-leading Emerson.
