RUTLAND, Vt. – The Norwich University tennis team avenged its only loss of the 2013 season with a 5-4 victory over in-state rival Castleton in non-conference action on Wednesday night at the Grand Slam Tennis Center.
The Cadets (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) won their third straight match after dropping their season opener 5-4 to Castleton on March 6. The difference in the two matches came in doubles as NU came out ahead 2-1 instead of trailing 2-1 heading into the singles matches.
Junior Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and sophomore Patrick Ogden (Madison, Ala.) moved to 4-0 on the year in doubles matches with an 8-6 win over Adam McCaffery and Mike Glasser to claim first doubles. Hoskey and Ogden played their third straight match in the top position after opening the season at second doubles.
Sophomore Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) and junior Joe Dvorak (De Soto, Kan.) provided the pivotal swing victory at No. 2 doubles with a thrilling 9-8 win over Will Levine and Matt Trombley.
Hoskey and Grindle each moved to 4-0 on the year at No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Coming off GNAC Player of the Week honors, Hoskey kept rolling with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Levine. Grindle kept pace with Hoskey by downing Glasser 7-5, 7-6.
Dvorak picked up the other Norwich victory at fourth singles with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Mike Divis to clinch the match for the Cadets.
Divis and Corey Kimball won No. 3 doubles over Kristine Brammer (Littleton, N.H.) and Gustavo Avila (Phoenix, Ariz.) with an 8-1 victory. Kimball also took sixth singles with straight set 6-0 victories over Avila.
McCaffery dealt Ogden his first singles loss of 2013 with a 6-3, 6-2 victory in straight sets at third singles. Zac Conlogue also won No. 5 singles over Brammer for the Spartans by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
Norwich will look to extend its winning streak to four straight on Saturday when it returns home to Shapiro Fieldhouse and hosts Johnson & Wales at 1 p.m. in another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) matchup.
