Box Score PAXTON, Mass.—Six different players scored to lead the Norwich University men's lacrosse team to its first win of the season, a 12-3 score against the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Thursday evening.
With the win, the Cadets improve to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in GNAC action, while the AMCATS fall to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in league play.
Ian Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) led the Cadets' attack with a game-high five points from three goals and two assists. Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) added three goals, while Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.) contributed two goals and three assists and Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) added two goals and an assist.
Norwich wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as McCarthy scored the first goal of the day just 1:03 into the first quarter. Thomas put the Cadets up 2-0 three minutes later, and Fuller extended the lead to 3-0 58 seconds after that. Mendoza and Joe DiTommaso (Hubbard, Ohio) scored at 6:24 and the 25 second marks to send Norwich into the second quarter with a 5-0 advantage.
Neither team scored for the first 11:21 of the second quarter until Mendoza's second goal of the game give Norwich a 6-0 lead. Josh Menge (Hagaman, N.Y.) assisted on the score. Anna Maria controlled the rest of the half as Rod Henriques and Lucas Stralka scored 25 seconds apart from one another to come within four, 6-2, entering halftime.
Norwich tacked on three more goals in the third quarter as McCarthy, Thomas and Fuller found the net to set the score at 9-2. Mendoza and Thomas added two more goals to open the fourth quarter before Anna Maria' Jason Baker tallied an unassisted goal for the AMCATS. Norwich's Zachary MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) netted a final goal with one second left in the game to set the score at 12-3.
Norwich goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) recorded seven saves and faced nine shots in 45 minutes of action before giving way to Ryan Fecteau (Danvers, Mass.), who posted one save in 15 minutes of action. Anna Maria netminder Joshua Giarratano posted 11 saves and faced 23 shots on net on the evening. The Cadets outshot the AMCATS 43-17 overall.
Faceoff specialist Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) posted a won 76.9 of the 13 face-offs he took and Andrew Bracy (Carthage, N.Y.) finished 3-for-4 for Norwich. Andrew Dustin (Canterbury, N.H.) recorded a game-high eight groundballs for the Cadets.
Norwich returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Boston to face Emmanuel College. The two teams will meet at Lasell's Grellier Field at 12:00 p.m. Norwich will be the home team in the neutral-site GNAC matchup.
