Men's Lacrosse: Cadets Fall 11-4 to UMass Dartmouth in Season Opener

DARTMOUTH, Mass.—The Norwich University men's lacrosse team opened the 2013 season with an 11-4 non-conference loss to the Corsairs of UMass-Dartmouth.  The game marked the season opener for both teams.

Four different players scored for the Cadets.  Ian Mendoza (Mount Airy, Md.) led the team with a goal and an assist, while Seth Fuller (Wheaton, Ill.), Ryan McCarthy (Medford, Mass.) and Arron Canarelli (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted single tallies.

UMass-Dartmouth jumped out to an early 3-0 lead as Riley Baxter notched a pair of first-quarter goals and Connor Gaffney added a single tally. Tyler Prentice would extend the Corsairs lead to 4-0 at the 13:28 mark of the second quarter before Norwich's Fuller put the Cadets on the board with an unassisted goal with 13 minutes left to play in the first half.

The Corsairs scored the next four goals of the game spanning the rest of the first half and the first 7:31 of the second half to lead 8-1 midway through the third quarter. Norwich would break up the UMass Dartmouth scoring stretch with a man-up goal by McCarthy with 4:50 left to play in the third quarter. Mendoza assisted on the goal.

Both teams would finish the quarter with an additional goal, as UMass Dartmouth's Jordan McPherson gave the Corsairs the 9-2 advantage with 3:25 remaining in the quarter and Norwich's Canarelli scored his first goal of 2013 with 25 ticks left on the clock.

Gaffney and Tyler Chasnov each posted fourth-quarter goals for UMass Dartmouth to extend the Corsairs lead to 11-3. With 8:43 left to play in the game, Mendoza tallied Norwich's fourth goal of the game to set the final score at 11-4.

Goaltender Mark Paradiso (Westford, Mass.) totaled eight saves in net for the Cadets, while Nick Thayer recorded 12 saves for the Corsairs. The Corsairs posted a narrow 34-33 shot and edged the Cadets 19-16 in shots-on-goal.

Face-off specialist Nate Fortezzo (Branford, Conn.) won nine of 18 face-off attempts and led the Cadets in ground balls with five. 

Norwich returns to action on Wednesday, March 6 when it travels to Plattsburgh State at 4:00 p.m. in non-conference action.
