Men's Tennis: Cadets end skid with 7-2 win over Johnson State

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's tennis team got back to its winning ways on Thursday night as it snapped a two-match losing streak with a 7-2 victory over Johnson State at Shapiro Fieldhouse.

The match was originally supposed to be played at Johnson State's outdoor courts, however rain forced the match to be moved indoors to Norwich's courts.

Senior Collin Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.), sophomore Brandon Carver (Peru, Maine) and Pat Ogden (Mobile, Ala.) each posted two victories to help lead Norwich (6-2, 2-1 GNAC) to the win.

Hyte garnered victories at first singles and second doubles to improve to 8-0 on the year in singles matches and 5-3 in doubles. He beat Ryan Joy 6-0, 6-2 in singles action and then teamed with fellow senior Zach Reichelt (Manchester, Conn.) to down Alen Turan and Kyle Young 8-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Ogden swept Peter Leblanc in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles while Carver downed Ben Algar 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Ogden and Carver combined to beat James Dempsey and Algar 8-3 at No. 3 doubles as well.

Sophomore Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and freshman Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) rebounding nicely from dropping first doubles to each win their respective singles matches convincingly.

Hoskey topped Chance Swofford 6-0, 6-1 to claim second singles and Grindle beat Turan 6-1, 6-2 to win No. 3 singles.

Swofford and Joy teamed up to take first singles for Johnson State (5-6, 2-0 NAC East) over Hoskey and Grindle 8-4.

Young also picked up a victory for the Badgers at No. 4 singles with forfeit win.

Norwich returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Emerson in its final regular season home match of the year in a showdown for the No. 2 spot in the GNAC standings. The winner will have the inside track to finishing second in the conference as well as hosting rights for the semifinal round of the GNAC Tournament, which will likely pit the two schools against each other again.
