NORTHFIELD, Vt. – The Norwich men's tennis team kept its perfect 2012 season intact with a 6-3 win over Castleton State on Wednesday in non-conference action at Shapiro Fieldhouse.
Once again the quartet of Collin Hyte (Marblehead, Mass.), Zach Reichelt (Manchester, Conn.), Christian Hoskey (Saint Charles, Ill.) and Ryan Grindle (Essex Junction, Vt.) powered the Cadets (4-0 overall, 1-0 GNAC) to the victory by sweeping first to fourth singles and teaming up to take the top two doubles matches.
Hyte beat Stew Quinn at first singles by scores of 6-1, 6-1 and then teamed with Reichelt to top Quinn and Adam McCaffery 8-4 in first doubles. Reichelt downed Jeremy Reppin by scores of 6-1, 6-2 at fourth singles.
Hoskey took second singles by scores of 6-0, 6-2 over McCaffery and then teamed with Grindle to take second doubles 8-1 over Matt Twyman-Trombly and Chris Belanger. Grindle won at third singles by scores of 6-0, 6-1 against Belanger.
Castleton State (2-3 overall, 0-0 NAC) got wins at third doubles, as well as fifth and sixth singles, but the Spartans had no answer for Norwich's top four players.
Corey Kimball and Mike Divis teamed up to take third doubles 8-5 over Joseph Dvorak (De Soto, Kansas) and Anthony Verno (Williamson, N.Y.). Divis scored another victory for Castleton at fifth singles over Patrick Ogden (Mobile, Ala.) by scores of 6-4, 7-5. Brian O'Neill picked up the victory at sixth singles over Brandon Carver (Peru, Maine) by scores of 6-3, 6-2 to round out the match.
Hyte, Reichelt, Hoskey and Grindle have combined to go 24-0 for Norwich so far in 2012 in singles and doubles matches. With Wednesday's victory, the Cadets continued their best start during the six-year tenure of head coach Kyle Dezotell.
Norwich will look to extend its winning streak to five straight on Saturday when it travels to Johnson & Wales for a crucial Great Northeast Athletic Conference match. JWU, Norwich and Suffolk are currently tied atop the conference standings for first place with all three teams sporting a 1-0 record. Match time is set for 1 p.m.
