PROVIDENCE, R.I.—The Norwich University wrestling team competed at the first East Coast Holiday Classic on Friday afternoon at the Wildcat Center on the campus of Johnson & Wales University. The tournament featured seven teams from the NCAA Division III and NJCAA ranks. No team scores were kept.
Evan Poole (West Milford, N.J.) clocked in as the Cadets' best finisher, winning his first matchup by pin in 2:51 in the 157 weight class. Teammate Pat McGrath (Marshfield, Mass.) also wrestled at 157, but fell in round one to Ethan Farrell from Johnson & Wales.
285 wrestler Alex Lawrence (Ledyard, Conn.) was the only other Cadet to win his first round matchup. The junior took down Johnson & Wales' Brendan Lenhardt by a score of 11-4. Lawrence fell in round two to the eventual weight class champion, Anthony Edgren of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
Weighing in at 125, Norwich's Richard Glazier (Peabody, Mass.) matched up against Jesse Gunter of Baldwin Wallace College. Gunter would win by pin in 2:33, and would his next three matchups to win the bracket.
Robby Zyko (Staten Island, N.Y.) was narrowly defeated by a score of 5-4 in the 141 weight class, falling to Damen Patisaul of Rhode Island College.
The Cadets are idle until January 12, 2013 when they travel to Trinity College to take on the hosts as well as Hunter and Mount Saint Vincent. Norwich will then host Johnson & Wales, Springfield and Springfield Tech Community College on January 20.
