Northfield, Vt.—The new-look Norwich University wrestling took to the mat for the first time Friday on day one of competition at the Ithaca Invitational.
Norwich sits in eighth after the first day with 12 points but the Cadets received multiple victories on day one. The Cadets took home a win at 125 pounds courtesy of Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.), who defeated Henry Beaman of Ithaca by a 6-2 decision.
The Cadets also were victorious at 165 pounds thanks to Dave Pinto (Milford, Mass.), who won an 8-5 decision over Dylen Seybolt of Johnson & Wales and at all 285 pound matchups because of wins by Alex Lawrence (Ledyard, Conn.), Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.) and Steven Maldonado (Nyack, N.Y.).
Norwich also received three points from Alex Kwmuntis (Peabody, Mass.) at 149 pounds. Kwmuntis lost in the championship to Ithaca's Kevin Collins before defeating Samuel Waters of Ithaca by pin in a consolation match.
Tyrell Carstarphen's (Topeka, Kan.) took home two points for the Cadets after defeating Oswego's Dustin Jones by a 7-4 decision in a consolation match at 149 pounds.
The Cadets will head back to the mat tomorrow for day two.
