Northfield, Vt.--- The Norwich University wrestling team continued its resurgence under first-year coach Alex Whitney by defeating Plymouth State University, 26-10, Wednesday at Andrews Hall Gymnasium.
The Cadets moved up to 7th in this week's Division III New England Regional rankings after strong finishes at the Ithaca and Roger Williams University Invitationals and took that momentum to the mat again, winning seven of the ten matches in their lone home meet of the fall semester.
Freshman Alex Stewart (Ellicott City, Md.) got the Cadets off to a fast start in the meet's opening match, defeating Ian Richeson by major decision to earn the Cadets a quick four point lead. The 125-pounder continues to be a sparkplug for Norwich as his collegiate career develops.
The teams traded victories until the Cadets captured four consecutive decisions to close out the meet in convincing fashion. Sophomore Nick Smith (Hanover, Mass.) earned a victory for Norwich at 174 pounds to give Norwich three more points before Chris Schenk (Newnan, Ga.) won a decisive 7-1 match to add another three to the Cadets tally.
The highlight of the night came when sophomore Aaron Hunt (Marshfield, Mass.) earned the only pin of the meet at 197 pounds to give the Cadets six points and the guaranteed victory.
Junior Anthony Joyce (Lincoln, R.I.) outlasted Adam Reed to win the heavyweight division for the Cadets in the meet's closing match.
Norwich will be back in action Nov. 17 when they travel to WPI to match up against WPI and Southern Maine.
